Meet the Team Monday – Meet JoyLynn

Welcome to one of our newest features on the blog – Meet the Team Mondays! Each Monday we’ll feature one of the Blue Heart Scraps Team Members so you can get to know them all better. Tell us alittle about yourself:

I’m JoyLynn, married to Kyle, mommy to two incredibly wonderful little boys (Tyler turned 6 in early February, Hayden will be 4 in late April). We live in northern Alabama where I’m attending the University of Alabama in Huntsville working on my Bachelor’s degree in Business.

Where did the name Blue Heart Scraps come from?

When I was offered my first store and had to pick a design name, I was utterly clueless. I didn’t want to use my regular name, so I asked a friend for suggestions. Her one recommendation? Pick something that’s close to my heart — and that is my boys. I tell everyone that mother nature was right to give me little boys, because my heart loved in shades of blue. Combining them together, I got Blue Heart Scraps.

Tell us about your scrapping experience: Did you ever paper scrap? When did you start digi-scrapping? How did you get started designing?

I tried to paper scrap a bit after my youngest son was born – but it takes so much effort to pull it all out, put it all away, and with small kids? No thank you! I enjoyed the idea, though, and had been a part of siggy forums and email groups for quite a few years, though, so the idea of taking my scrapping digital felt right. Designing came about in part because of challenges at random scrap forums – and from there, it was freebies that I created and offered for download on my blog. It was fun, but it didn’t fully catch hold of me until the first time I saw someone create a layout with a product I had made. I think scrapping is such a beautiful, personal adventure – and to be a part of helping record a moment in someone else’s life? A feeling I can’t quite explain, but certainly one I wanted to experience again and again!

What program do you use?

A strange combination of CS5, PSPX3, Illustrator, and ArtRage

What inspires you most when creating?

My boys, colors, songs, books, nature, design – and then sometimes, I’m not even sure where it comes from.

Can you share a tip or a piece of advice for your fellow digi scrappers out there?

Remember that digital booking is about documenting the moments of your life you don’t ever want to forget. It’s fun to scraplift beautiful layouts and take part in challenges that force you a bit out of your normal comfort zone – but in the end, all that matters is that you love the layout.

Tell us something different about you:

Back in 1995, I took a business trip with my mom for a few weeks to Germany and France. While in France, we stayed at a very small, family-owned hotel close to the train station that was run by 2 cousins. One of the men, Youcef, took great care of my mom and I while we were there, showing us around the beautiful city, recommending great, out of the way restaurants, etc. He took our phone number before we left and called me several times over the next year, to check in and catch up. Ten years later, I got a Facebook friend request from him, as he said he had thought of me fondly over the past decade and was so glad to be able to reach out and contact me again. I guess I am unforgettable, eh? 🙂

Tuesday Treats Freebie Time!

This is the first year we’ll be throwing our boys an ‘official’ birthday party.  We’ve only done a small family get-together or celebration with just the four of us the previous years.  But, with Tyler in Kindergarten this year, and the fun new friends it’s brought along, we decided to try and amp it up just a bit this year (not much, he is only 6, but a little at least).  That means ordering birthday cakes (we’re doing an Angry Bird theme, and I’m not that great a baker), making fun goody bags and creating birthday party invitations for all his sweet little friends!
